LATE QUATERNARY ACTIVITY OF THE HARAMACHI SEGMENT OF THE FUTABA FAULT IN NORTHEAST JAPAN THROUGH TOPOGRAPHIC ANAGLYPH IMAGES AND BOREHOLE CORE SEDIMENT ANALYSIS

The Haramachi Fault segment in the northeastern part of Honshu Island, Japan, has mainly sinistral fault movements with minor reverse component within Futaba Zone Japan arc. 2011 Mw 9.0 earthquake occurred off Pacific coast Tohoku which caused large crustal deformations. Despite being closest active to epicenter, very limited investigation been conducted on Zone. Previous studies used smaller scale topographic maps and activity was estimated only from trenching borehole investigations central segment. Thus, geometry, kinematic, recent tectonic is not well identified, especially northern part. In this study, we use a combination high-resolution DEMs (2-m 5-m mesh), several types anaglyph images (slope, negative positive openness), field survey confirm remote sensing interpretation. Subtle surface expression deformation associated faulting, such as deformed terrace risers, deflected drainages, small scarps can now be identified more clearly. Several new strands were found supported by outcrops confirming system. estimation total length produced approach study yields 25 km, capable producing 6.5 – 7.0 or Mjma 7.2 earthquakes if ruptures occur altogether future. Moreover, shallow radiocarbon dating soil organic material revealed minimal timing most faulting 3694 ± 24 BP. This research provides revised understanding distribution validates event broadly.
